Devin Singletary vs. Rookie RB? Who’s Saquon Replacement?

The enthusiasm over the (maybe) “new” New York Giants offense is understandable, in part because a difference in 2024 is almost inevitable …

In large part because too many previous editions of the offense were almost unwatchable.

But in an effort to replace running back Saquon Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and inarguably this team’s best player (when healthy), maybe the Brakes of Reason should be tapped.

Barkley is gone, having signed with the rival Philadelphia Eagles in free agency – without the Giants even making him an offer to stay, by the way.

Now along comes this 2024 NFL Draft rookie class, and with it more of that aforementioned enthusiasm.

There isn’t a change at QB; Daniel Jones remains in place. But with their first-round pick, the Giants selected LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers. There is pressure on him to be an immediate difference-maker, and that’s OK because the Giants have few other choices.

Meanwhile, some are putting the same sort of pressure on the team – and therefore pressure on the kid – who is new to the running backs room.

But no, there is absolutely no reason for the Giants to immediately “turn their backfield over” to rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Tracy is a fifth-round pick. The Purdue product comes with promise. But … did we mention that he’s a fifth-round pick?

If the Giants had to play a game today, Tracy wouldn’t even know where to stand.

And if the Giants have to play a game in September (which they will)?

USATSI_21541180_168403188_lowresThat’s why they signed veteran Devin Singletary in free agency.

Singletary was productive when he last surprisingly took over the lead role with the Texans. He played that same role when Giants head coach Brain Daboll was the coordinator in their days together with the Buffalo Bills.

Tracy’s time? It might come. Singletary’s time? It’s in September.
