While opinions on Daniel Jones vary, the Giants indicated that they plan to stick with their starter as he enters his sixth season with the team by not drafting a quarterback.

Jones’ 2023 season was plagued with injuries, but he played well enough in 2022 — including leading the team to a playoff win — to earn himself a lucrative extension.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports put together a power ranking of starting quarterbacks, which he notes is based on current standing rather than “the bigger picture.” In it, he puts Jones in last place at No. 32, behind QBs who have never taken an NFL snap. The Giants starter ranked lower than players that may not even earn a starting job in 2024.

ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan called out the wild take on X.

“The Daniel Jones slander is out of control,” Ranaan wrote on Wednesday. “Played at a top 10 level (6th in QBR) two years ago. Had four starts from start to finish in 2023 and now he’s below every rookie QB and career backups? The idea he’s a complete scrub is stupid. Came three TD passes shy of the then-rookie record in 2019. Was almost perfect in a playoff win 16 months ago. Last season was a total disaster for a variety of reasons (he played poorly, was w/o Andrew Thomas and Saquon for most of those 4 starts). But the idea he can’t play at all is just wrong. The pendulum has swung too far.”

Jones made six starts last year, first limited by neck injuries before suffering a season-ending ACL tear in Week 9. In those six games, he was sacked 30 times.

The Giants reportedly tried to trade up with the Patriots for the No. 3 overall pick to select Drake Maye, but New England wouldn’t budge. New York brought in Drew Lock this offseason as backup, and on Wednesday, it claimed former CFL star quarterback Nathan Rourke off waivers from the Patriots. They join a quarterback room that also still features Tommy DeVito.
