Giants sign DT Elijah Chatman after rookie mini-camp tryout

Undersized defensive lineman is known for his power

The New York Giants had 75 players at rookie mini-camp over the weekend, 14 draft picks or undrafted free agent signees and 61 tryout players.

“You don’t want anybody to slip through the cracks, so you bring as many people as you can in and give them an opportunity,” Daboll said on Saturday. “Again maybe you sign one, maybe you sign two or you don’t sign any. But I think it’s good for those guys to get an opportunity and for us to get eyes on them doing some of our stuff, and if someone we think is worth bringing up and signing, that’s what we’ll do.”

Well, the Giants are apparently not letting former SMU defensive tackle Elijah Chatman slip through the cracks. Per Aaron Wilson, the Giants are signing Chatman to the team’s 90-man roster after a successful mini-camp tryout.

Chatman is a squat, powerful 6-foot, 278-pound defensive tackle. During mini-camp on Friday, when defensive linemen were going through drills right in front of media, Chatman showed explosion out of his stance and pop in his hands, driving defensive linemen holding a blocking pad backwards on numerous occasions.

Chatman had 4.5 sacks, 9.0 tackles for loss and 33 tackles (23 solo) for SMU in 2023. In 60 games over five seasons for the Mustange, he had 148 tackles (98 solo) and 33.0 tackles for loss.
