Man United women put to the sword in 6-0 battering by Chelsea at Old Trafford

On the last day of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season, Manchester United’s female team suffered a 6-0 beating at the hands of Chelsea, who gave their players a very hard lesson.

Considering their performance the previous week, when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur to win the FA Cup, United didn’t have much to gain. Perhaps the only target that Marc Skinner and his team had in mind was finishing fourth, ahead of Liverpool. Chelsea, on the other hand, knew going into the game that victory would give them every chance to win a fifth straight WSL championship, therefore the stakes couldn’t have been higher for them.

United didn’t have much to gain, especially after their FA Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur the week before. Marc Skinner and his team may have simply had placing fourth, ahead of Liverpool, as their goal. The stakes couldn’t have been higher for Chelsea, though, as they knew heading into the match that success would give them every chance to win a fifth consecutive WSL championship.

A back-four consisting of Jayde Riviere, Maya Le Tissier, Millie Turner, and Hannah Blundell preceded the custodian as Skinner put Mary Earps in goal. The midfield pivot was made up of Lisa Naalsund and Katie Zelem, with Ella Toone in the hole just in front of them. Melvine Malard and Lucia Garcia flanked Rachel Williams at either side of the queue. United had a terrible start to the match as they gave up after only two minutes. Chelsea made a quick start and quickly took the lead. Guro Reiten’s cross was met by Mayra Ramirez, who beat Earps with a powerful header.
