Former Liverpool star Luis Suárez could retire after revealing he was “constantly” struggling with a knee injury.

Suarez currently plays for Gremio after leaving his youth club Nacional last December. So far, he has made 25 appearances for the Brazilian team.

However, claims in Brazil suggest that Suarez is considering announcing his official retirement due to a long-standing knee problem. The striker still has a one-year contract signed in December, but a report by GZH Esportes states that “a meeting between the athlete and the club’s management will resolve the situation in the next few days”.

And now Gremio president Alberto Guerra has revealed that the striker suffers from “constant suffering” and that the problem facing the Uruguayan has also been described as “serious”.

Luis Suarez is reaching his limit,” Guerra said in a video on Twitter. ‘In order to play he receives injections and special treatments almost every day; he feels constant pain. The matter is serious.”

Suarez left Anfield for Barcelona in 2014 having scored 82 goals in 133 appearances in all competitions for the club. During his six years at the Camp Nou, the now 36-year-old made 147 starts in 191 appearances. The former Ajax star won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and the 2015 Champions League as Barca beat Juventus 3-1 to seal a hat-trick in his first season alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.

The striker then ended his spell in Europe after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2022. He had spent two years in Madrid and was part of the squad that won La Liga in 2020/21.
