Liverpool are on the hunt for new midfielders this summer as Jurgen Klopp prepares for a squad reshuffl Jamie Carragher has backed the idea of Liverpool signing Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this summer.
Mount, with a year remaining on his contract, tops Liverpool’s midfield list and could be sold by his current employers as they seek to free up funds and cut their bloated squad.
A recent report on the situation suggests there are ‘significant doubts’ over whether the Londoners can resume contract talks with the 24-year-old after previous attempts to secure his long-term future. Manchester United are rumored to have made a £55m bid for Mount – Chelsea valuing their man at £85m.
Carragher told The Anfield Wrap why it would make sense to pursue Mount and why he doesn’t understand the negativity some have towards the England international: ‘Mason Mount is funny in that people always seem a bit small’ bitten for any reason. I’ve never had one, I’m a big fan.
“He’s a Champions League winner. I really like him. He has the energy to push, he would create a bigger scoring threat in midfield than we currently have from Jordan [Henderson] at this position. All the top managers who have been at Chelsea have done it.” selected him. He plays for England and I think the club needs to think about that local situation as well.”
Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister is another interesting Premier League player for the Reds, although Jurgen Klopp’s side may have to fend off Manchester City and United to agree a deal for the Argentine. Although excited by the prospect of the world champions joining the club, Carragher admitted he believes a central midfielder should also be targeted.
If we bring Mac Allister and Mason Mount, I’d appreciate it. I really want us to sign a defensive midfielder as well because Mount and Mac Allister are more attacking midfielders,” he said.I don’t think our problem is to advance, it’s to defend. If we want to get back to where we want to be, which is to challenge Manchester City and win big trophies, then we have to manage the defence, because that has been the biggest problem this season.”
