Rams News: LA’s Most Important Non-Quarterback Identified
The Los Angeles Rams are eager to build on their unexpected playoff success from the previous season as they begin the 2024 campaign. With the exception of All-Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald, who retired this offseason, they are returning with a similar squad.
Los Angeles did, however, also bolster their roster with some additional talent. They’ve positioned themselves well to compete in the NFC this season, but they’ll need their stars to deliver.
Apart from quarterback Matthew Stafford, Adam Rank of NFL.com identified the most significant player for the Rams this season. He brought up Puka Nacua, the wide receiver, who set numerous records in his first season last year.
“The Rams’ previous season, with Nacua (who was mentioned in this same area last year), was a complete blessing. After missing the first four games of the season, Cooper Kupp had a disappointing season. However, the BYU rookie made a huge impact. Nacua had the most scrimmage yards of any rookie during the Super Bowl era with five games of at least 150. He also finished as a finalist for Offensive Rookie of the Year after recording seven games with 100 or more receiving yards. Of course, he also set new NFL records for rookie receiving yards (1,486) and receptions (105). Against the Lions in the playoffs, Nacua amassed 181 receiving yards and a touchdown, vastly outpacing Kupp’s five catches for 27 yards. It was as if Torry Holt had passed Isaac Bruce ages ago (not that you’re old enough to remember that). Although Kupp will continue to play a role, Puka is now in the spotlight.
The Rams will once again have one of the best offenses in the league if Nacua can perform at a level comparable to that of previous season. If he doesn’t demonstrate that he can perform at this caliber once again, his rookie year will be seen as merely a fluke.
The Rams will be largely depending on Nacua this season, but he has the talent to win it all again. Teams will be plotting against him the entire season since he is no longer an unexpected player.
